Visually separate content area for the Dark Design

Just an Idea: Make the content area slightly darker than the empty space around it to separate it visually. Without it, it looks kind of lost on a fullscreen desktop.

Well I’m not exactly a web developer (images were done in PS), so this is far from elegant responsive css - but this covers most of what I meant:

I’ve applied it for now, but it does seem to make the site a bit ‘harsher’. I’d love to hear what other people think about this. For reference, here’s the ‘old’ look of the dark theme:
